MD Info-Seeking
Bennett NL, et al. "Physicians' Internet Information-Seeking Behaviors" Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions 2004 Winter;24(1):31-8.
Results of a survey of 3,347 MD's, seeking to describe their Internet behaviors. Several points made here are relevant to hospital librarianship:
"Critical to seeking clinical information is the credibility of the source, followed by relevance, unlimited access, speed, and ease of use."
"Ely, et al. listed obstacles that occurred when physicians tried to answer questions with evidence, including excesive time to find information, original questions lacking specificity, difficulty in choosing an effective search strategy, and not finding the appropriate resource to cover the content."
A table compares MD Internet barriers in 2001 and 2003. The problems are becoming increasingly worse. Barriers listed include:
Too much information to scan
Specific information not available
Navigation/searching difficulties
Too slow
Software incompatibilities
The skill set of medical librarians--identifying best resources, possessing expert searching ability, and filtering information--can be directly applied to these stated problems.
