Outsourcing

The administrators of one hospital in my state were planning to outsource library functions to the public library. The intent was that the librarian would become the employee of the PL. There were many problems with this intended arrangement, and eventually those administrators realized that it wasn't such a good idea after all. They lost a good librarian in the process, because she took a new job at a hospital that had a greater understanding and appreciation of her role.

The public library, (being attuned to the needs of the public, of course) proposed a greater emphasis on consumer health services--but who was going to provide the services for the medical staff, while the librarian was out of the building attending to the needs of the public? That was a crucial point.
